Several corn varieties are available to West Virginia growers (i.e., Pioneer, Doebler, Southern States, and Asgrow). Variety selection depends on length of growing season (i.e., 105, 95, and 85 days), need for silage or grain, soil conditions, weed pressure, and producer preference. Field corn grows in most soil types.
West Virginia’s sweet corn is grown in scattered locations across the state. Most of the Mountain State’s sweet corn farms are located in Preston, Randolph, Mineral, Putnam, Hampshire, and Jackson counties (3).
